Job Summary
The Senior Underwriting Officer evaluates and manages insurance risks, reviews complex proposals, determines appropriate pricing and coverage terms, and ensures compliance with company policies and Ethiopian insurance regulations. The role supports profitability and portfolio quality through effective negotiation, portfolio analysis, and technical guidance to junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
Review, analyze, and evaluate insurance risks in line with company underwriting guidelines and insurers’ policies.
Prepare, assess, and approve underwriting proposals, quotations, endorsements, and renewals.
Liaise with insurance companies to negotiate terms, conditions, premiums, and coverage for clients.
Ensure underwriting decisions comply with regulatory requirements, internal controls, and risk management standards.
Provide technical underwriting support and guidance to junior underwriting staff and other departments.
Monitor portfolio performance and recommend corrective actions to improve risk quality and profitability.
Maintain accurate underwriting records, reports, and documentation.
Support business development activities through sound underwriting advice and client-focused solutions.
About You
Qualifications and Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in business or other related fields; professional certifications is advantageous.
Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience as an Underwriter Officer in an insurance companies.
Strong knowledge of Ethiopian insurance laws, reinsurance markets, and underwriting principles for various lines of business.
Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in MS Office Suite; experience with insurance related software is an advantage.
Proven ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and communicate complex information clearly to diverse stakeholders.
Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
