About the Organization

The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) is an international conservation organization based in Germany. FZS is dedicated to preserving biodiversity and conserving wild places in biodiversity-rich areas across four continents.

The organization’s mission is to maintain the earth’s biological diversity and preserve the functions of ecosystems, ensuring that nature and wildlife thrive alongside local communities.


The Africa Programme

The Africa Programme is the organization’s largest and oldest division. FZS focuses its strategic conservation efforts on five focal countries within the continent:

  • Ethiopia

  • Tanzania

  • Zambia

  • Zimbabwe

  • DR Congo


FZS in Ethiopia

FZS has been active on the ground in Ethiopia for well over ten years. Currently, the organization focuses its expertise on the Bale Mountains, working toward the following objectives:

1. Afroalpine Habitat Conservation

  • Supporting the Ethiopian Government and local communities in conserving Africa’s largest tract of afroalpine habitat.

  • Protecting the unique and endangered biodiversity endemic to the Ethiopian highlands.

2. Community & Government Partnership

  • Providing technical and operational support to the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA).

  • Engaging local communities to ensure sustainable management of natural resources.
