About Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR)
Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is a leading Ethiopian civil society organization dedicated to increasing the participation of lawyers in the protection and promotion of human rights.
Currently, LHR is partnering with the UNODC on a critical project: “Improving Access to Justice in Criminal Justice Process through Legal Aid Services and Capacity Building.” This initiative provides essential legal support to detainees in police stations and prison centers, ensuring the constitutional right to access justice is upheld for disadvantaged communities.
Role and Responsibilities
The Assistant Lawyer will work under the guidance of a Principal Lawyer to provide high-impact legal aid services within selected detention and prison centers in Addis Ababa.
Key Duties:

Legal Support: Assist the Principal Lawyer in providing free legal services and rendering legal counsel to detainees.

Drafting: Help prepare legal pleadings, briefs, and petitions in accordance with the Ethiopian criminal justice system.

Administrative Oversight: Manage documentation and clerical activities as instructed to ensure organized case management.

Ethics: Discharge all duties in strict accordance with the professional ethical standards for lawyers stipulated by Ethiopian law.

Research: Stay updated on national and international legal frameworks regarding the rights of arrested persons.
About You
1. Professional Competencies

Education: University Degree in Law (LLB).

Experience: 0 years (This is an entry-level position perfect for recent graduates).

Legal Knowledge: Must have a sufficient understanding of:

The Ethiopian legal and criminal justice systems.

Criminal and procedural laws of Ethiopia.

Constitutional rights to access justice and international human rights instruments.

2. Personal Qualities & Skills

Communication: Fluency in written and spoken English and Amharic is mandatory. You must have the ability to explain complex legal matters clearly.

Passion: A deep commitment to justice, fairness, and the respect of Human Rights.

Operational Skills: Proactive, result-driven, and able to work under pressure with limited supervision.

Technical: Computer literate with excellent documentation and internet research skills.
