Organizational Profile
Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is a distinguished civil society organization established in 2018 to amplify the role of legal professionals in protecting human rights in Ethiopia.
LHR is currently spearheading a vital project: “Improving access to justice in criminal justice process through legal aid services and capacity building activities in East Shewa, West Arsi, and Addis Ababa.” This project provides critical legal aid within prison centers to support disadvantaged communities and ensure constitutional protections are realized.
Job Objective
The Project Officer is responsible for the end-to-end coordination, management, and oversight of project activities. Reporting to the Program Director, you will ensure that legal aid services and capacity-building efforts run effectively, remain on schedule, and align with LHR’s strategic human rights priorities.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Project Management & Implementation

Strategic Planning: Plan and implement project activities across the Shashemene Prison Center, Adama Prison Center, and the Addis Ababa Coordination Center.

Technical Drafting: Prepare high-quality terms of reference (ToRs), concept papers, and detailed project plans.

Financial Oversight: Monitor the project budget, track payments, and ensure activities remain within financial and time constraints in coordination with the Finance Head.

Event Coordination: Organize and schedule project-related workshops, trainings, and advocacy meetings.
2. Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting

Quality Assurance: Ensure all outputs are high-quality, effective, and integrated with national and international human rights principles.

Data Analysis: Design reporting templates, collect field data, and prepare weekly/narrative reports for donor organizations.

Team Supervision: Supervise and evaluate the work of legal aid providers and project staff across all workstations.
3. Administrative Systems

System Design: Create file management and personnel evaluation systems to boost organizational efficiency.

Logistics: Manage logistical requirements necessary for the execution of field-based legal aid activities.
About You
1. Educational Background
-
Degree: Minimum LL.B. Degree (Bachelor of Laws). A Master’s degree in Law, Human Rights, Political Science, or Project Management is highly preferred.

Certifications: Formal training in Project Cycle Management (PCM), Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E), or advocacy is a significant plus.
2. Professional Experience

Tenure: Minimum 3–5 years of project management experience.

Sector Focus: At least two (2) years of direct experience working in the Human Rights sector.

Grants Knowledge: Proven ability to interpret grant-related governmental documents and manage donor-specific procedures.
3. Core Skills & Requirements

Languages: Fluency in Amharic and English is mandatory; proficiency in Afan Oromo is a strong advantage given the project locations.

Software: Advanced skills in MS Excel (for numerical analysis) and MS Word.

Soft Skills: Strong ethics for managing confidential data, conflict resolution skills, and a “team player” mindset.
