Job Summary

The Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing ledger systems, and ensuring strict compliance with local government regulations and international donor requirements. Operating under the general direction of the Finance and Administration Manager, this role demands rigorous transparency, high personal integrity, and a detail-oriented approach to supporting NEWA’s civil society mission.


Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Management & Record Keeping: Maintain all primary accounting ledgers, trial balances, and monthly reconciliations. Monitor cash flow patterns and execute timely payouts to organizational vendors, staff, and project partners.

  • Budget Tracking & Reporting: Assist in the construction of baseline project and operations budgets. Perform monthly variance analysis tracking actual expenditures against projections and prepare donor-specific financial declarations.

  • Payroll Processing & System Reconciliation: Compile and reconcile monthly payroll data across three points: the system ledger, Excel trackers, and physical bank withdrawals. Document and attach comprehensive breakdowns of income tax, withholding tax, and pension contributions directly to corresponding payment vouchers.

  • Audit & Legal Compliance: Package financial data and serve as a core technical contact for internal and external audit investigations. Guarantee absolute alignment with Ethiopian tax laws, labor laws, and civil society organizational mandates.

  • Data & Asset Custodianship: Securely manage highly confidential network financial files and maintain physical inventory registries for head office equipment, electronics, and stationery assets.


About You

Academic Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (BA) in Accounting.

  • Industry Context: At least five (5) years of direct accounting experience working within an NGO or non-profit environment.

  • Technical Literacy: Full computer literacy with proven proficiency utilizing core accounting packages (such as QuickBooks, Peachtree, or equivalent ERP setups).

  • Exceptional numerical analysis and attention to detail.

  • Strong organizational, verbal communication, and interpersonal collaboration skills.

  • Proven capacity to manage highly sensitive, confidential corporate data with strict professional ethics.
