EURIKA, in partnership with N4ED and IDS, invites qualified and creative professionals to apply for short-term consultancy assignments under the project “Joint Action for Equality, Peace, and Healing in Ethiopia.”
This project aims to strengthen gender equality, peace building, and human rights through community-based, participatory, and culturally relevant approaches. The project is
implemented across Tigray, Amhara, South Ethiopia, Benishangul-Gumuz, Harari, and Addis Ababa.
The current call is issued under Component 2: Empowered Communities Promoting Positive Shifts in Behavior and Attitudes toward Gender Equality and Peace building, focusing on the development of creative educational and inspirational publications grounded in community realities.
2. .Purpose of the Call
The purpose of this call is to recruit qualified professionals to support the development of:
A comic book titled “Empowering Selam” that addresses education disruption, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), gender norms, and peaceful conflict resolution; and
A women’s biography book documenting and celebrating the life stories of ordinary Ethiopian women contributing to gender equality, education, peacebuilding, and
community development.
Both publications will be grounded in community realities and informed by participatory consultations.
3. Scope of Work
Applicants will be engaged based on their specialization as outlined below.
3.1 Component 2.1: Comic Book – “Empowering Selam.”
The comic book will be developed as an educational and advocacy tool designed for students and young audiences. It will:
Present a clear storyline centered on a female protagonist navigating challenges related to education disruption, SGBV, and restrictive gender norms
Promote positive social norms, peaceful conflict resolution, and shared responsibility
Be developed through a participatory process informed by 18 focus group discussions
Use age-appropriate language, culturally relevant illustrations, and context-specific scenarios
Be produced in Amharic, with potential translation into other local languages
3.2. Component 2.2: Women’s Biography Book
with students and community members
The biography book will document and present the life stories of selected Ethiopian women role models on the 6 regions (Tigray, Amhara, South Ethiopia, Benishangul-Gumuz, Harari, and Addis Ababa) it will:
Capture the lived experiences, challenges, and achievements of ordinary women
Highlight contributions to gender equality, education, peacebuilding, and community development
Be developed through interviews, qualitative documentation, and validation processes
Use a respectful, ethical, and empowering storytelling approach
4. Positions and Responsibilities
4.2 Position 1: Comic Book Artist (Illustrator)
Key Responsibilities
Develop character designs, scenes, and visual storytelling elements for the comic book
Translate key themes into clear, engaging, and culturally sensitive illustrations
Participate in review, validation, and revision processes
Position 2: Authors (Comic Book Writers) Key Responsibilities
Authors will develop:
The storyline, dialogue, and narrative structure of the comic book “Empowering Selam.”
The content must be informed by findings from 18 focus group discussions with students and community members and aligned with project objectives on gender equality, peacebuilding, and human rights.
Collaborate with illustrators and project teams throughout the process
Position 3: Biography Writers
Key Responsibilities
Conduct interviews and document the life stories of selected women
Producing compelling written profiles that highlight challenges, resilience, leadership, and contributions to gender equality, education, and peace building.
Support validation workshops and feedback incorporation
Supporting validation processes through focus group discussions with the project team.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct interviews and document the life stories of selected women

Strong narrative writing and editing skills

About You
Qualifications
Individual professional or legally registered entity based in Addis Ababa
Diploma or degree in visual arts, illustration, or related fields
Proven experience in educational or behavior change communication materials
Strong portfolio of illustration or visual storytelling work
Familiarity with gender equality, SGBV, and education issues
Qualifications
Be an individual professional or a legally registered individual/organization based in Addis Ababa
Proven ability to produce culturally relevant content in Amharic (knowledge of other Ethiopian languages is an added advantage)
Demonstrated experience in developing educational or behavior change communication materials, particularly for children and young people
Experience working on themes related to gender equality, SGBV, peacebuilding, human rights, or education is a plus.
Familiarity and sensitivity with issues related to SGBV, gender norms, and education in the Ethiopian context
Experience in comic books, illustration, or visual storytelling
Strong skills in qualitative research and facilitation of focus group discussions
Qualifications

Strong qualitative research and facilitation skills
Ability to produce culturally relevant content in Amharic
Submission of writing samples and at least three reference letter
Be an individual professional or a legally registered individual/organization based in Addis Ababa

5. Key Outputs and Deliverables
Finalized comic book script and illustrations are ready for design and printing
Finalized biographical profiles of 12 selected Ethiopian women in 6 regions(Tigray, Amhara, South Ethiopia, Benishangul-Gumuz, Harari, and Addis Ababa)
Active and consecutive participation in review and validation workshops, including focus group discussions
Incorporation of feedback from consortium partners and target communities
Submission of all outputs in agreed formats and timeline
6. Selection Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on:
Proven relevant experience and quality of experience
Quality of portfolio or writing samples
Understanding of thematic areas
Ability to meet timelines
Consideration of gender balance and inclusion of emerging local talent
7. Location
Addis Ababa or ability to regularly coordinate in Addis Ababa.
8. Duration
The assignment will cover content development, participatory consultations, review and
validation workshops, and finalization of outputs, within a period of February 23– May 29 2026.
9. Ethical Considerations
All activities must comply with ethical and safeguarding standards, including informed consent, confidentiality, and sensitivity when addressing SGBV and engaging with women and young
people.
10. Management and Coordination
Selected professionals will work under the technical supervision of EURIKA, N4ED, and IDS, with regular coordination meetings and progress reviews.
