ROLE PURPOSE
The Legal Advisor will provide expert legal counsel on a responsive retainer basis to the Senior Management Team and Human Resources Department.
The role involves ensuring full legal and regulatory compliance with Ethiopian law, CSO regulations, and global federation standards. The advisor will support legal reviews, policy development, incident management, and compliance communications while operating flexibly across remote, virtual, and field-based environments.
KEY FOCUS AREAS / RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide legal advice on contracts, donor agreements, partnership MoUs, and vendor risk frameworks.
• Advise HR on employment contracts, performance management, disciplinary procedures, and labor law compliance.
• Represent the organization in Ethiopian courts, labor tribunals, arbitration, and dispute resolution forums.
• Provide legal oversight for safeguarding (SHEA) investigations and duty-of-care/security policy compliance.
• Support regulatory, federation (GS/Regional), and ACSO compliance communications as required.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Ethiopian NGO laws and global federation legal standards.
ABOUT YOU
Qualifications & Experience
• Qualified legal professional with a valid Ethiopian practicing license.
• LLB or LLM degree.
• Minimum of 7+ years of legal experience.
• Strong background in NGO/CSO or international development sector preferred.
• Proven litigation experience with the right of audience before Ethiopian courts and tribunals.
• Experience managing and overseeing external litigation counsel where applicable.
Technical Expertise
• Strong knowledge of Ethiopian labor law.
• Contract law expertise.
• CSO regulatory framework understanding.
• Safeguarding compliance knowledge.
Personal Attributes
• Analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
• Strong alignment with human rights, gender justice, and feminist leadership values.
• Ability to work flexibly on demand (remote or in-person as required).
