Working at GAIN: Tackling the Global Malnutrition Crisis

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is an international organization launched at the United Nations in 2002. Driven by a vision of a world without malnutrition, GAIN acts as a catalyst by building alliances between governments, businesses, and civil society to implement sustainable, scalable solutions to global food system failures.

The Global Challenge

Malnutrition takes multiple forms, affecting nearly half of the global population. The scale of the challenge shapes the urgency of GAIN’s work worldwide:

  • Hunger: 795 million people—one in nine globally—go hungry every day.

  • Hidden Hunger: Close to 2 billion people survive on low-nutrient diets that lack the vital vitamins and minerals required to grow properly, stay healthy, and sustain a family.

  • Overweight & Obesity: Approximately 1.4 billion people worldwide struggle with overweight and obesity, outnumbering those who suffer from undernourishment.

In total, around 3.5 billion people—half the population on Earth—suffer from some form of malnutrition.

GAIN’s Mission & Strategic Focus

GAIN targets the structural roots of poverty and food insecurity by focusing its programs and resources on the most vulnerable demographics:

  • Target Audiences: Efforts are focused intentionally on children, adolescent girls, and women, as ensuring their access to sustainable, nutritious diets is the most effective way to break the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition.

  • Alliances for Scale: By bridging the gap between public policy, private sector food production, and grassroots civil society, GAIN develops delivery models that improve nutrition at a global scale.

  • The Ultimate Goal: Leveraging collaborative networks and evidence-based interventions to completely eliminate malnutrition within our lifetimes.
